## What are Raven’s progressive matrices?

Matrices are a well-known form for testing logical reasoning during an intelligence test. It is a pictorial test, in which images are used. Matrices are known as culture-free. Partly because, for example, language and education do not play a role. The shapes used are also not reserved for Western Europe, for example. So everyone, regardless of origin, education or language, can be compared.

The matrix was conceived by John Raven in 1938 and is therefore also called Raven’s Progressive Matrices. John Raven developed three tests:

• Standard Progressive Matrices
• Colored Progressive Matrices

These three tests are no longer used. However, the form as devised by John Raven is used.

## Types of matrix relationships:

With a matrix, something changes according to a certain rule. A number of simple connections are:

• Increase: a figure / angle is added.
• Decrease: a figure / angle goes off each time.
• Rotate: A figure rotates clockwise / counterclockwise.
• Appearance: change the color, shape, filling and size, border.

## How to solve matrix questions:

• Search for the connection. There can of course also be several connections.
• Look at the answer options and select the options with the correct connection.
• If the answer does not seem to be in between, remove any answers that are not in any way related.

### Talent Q type matrices

The Talent Q elements logical (matrices) is one of the three components of the elements test. A Talent Q matrix always has nine planes where one plane must be entered. The area to be filled in can be in different places. You must choose from five, ten or fifteen answer options.

The elements logical test is adaptive: the questions adapt to your level. It is therefore important that you ask as many good questions as possible instead of as many as possible. With this test you have a number of seconds per question. In this case it is advisable to bet if the time is running out.

With these matrices you have both vertical and horizontal relationships. In addition, the figures also move within the plane: it is therefore a dynamic matrix. A lot is happening in both the matrix and the answers. You will therefore have to pay close attention to the relationships.
